Summer Series

For the summer of 2006 we are participating in the Monday night West Bay Yacht Club Series, the Wednesday night East Greenwich Yacht Club Series and the Appanoag Harbor Yacht Club Lady Skippers Series which convenes occasionally on Thursday nights.  The skipper decided not to do the Tuesday night summer series this year.

5/31/06  First race of the East Greenwich Yacht Club Summer Series

crew: Charley, Gus, Jeff, Tonya, Cliff, Bob

The Wednesday night series begins.  It was nice to be out on the long courses again.  Pretty gusty, over 20, with a fair amount of chop.  A real workout.  Mystery Bob showed up again.  Hmmmm.

6/5/06  First race of the West Bay Yacht Club Summer Series

crew: Charley, Eric, Maureen, Jeff

The Monday night series begins.  It was a virtually windless start.  We sat on the starting line for 5 minutes.  Finally enough wind filled in to move, but it was a very flukey night.  Boats 300 yards apart could be in radically different wind.  A classic "Light Air Crapshoot".  The crew did pretty good, but we still came in last.  We had a decent spinnaker run to the finish.  This series will be interesting because there is such a wide range of PHRF ratings, one boat rating 51 to our 120.

Nice steady winds on either side of ten knots.  An overall good performance by the senior crew.

A fun reaching finish with the big chute.

6/14/06  EGYC

crew: Charley, Jim, Eric, Maureen, Cliff, David

Steady winds.  We won!

BLOW-IN' STINK ! ! !

Steady winds from the south to over 22 knots and whitecaps in the outer course.  One boat blew a main, several others withdrew, we were the only ones to fly a spinnaker.  Yahoooo!  A wild ride.  and, We won!

crew: Charley, Eric, Maureen, Jeff, Greg, Bob, Hiroko, Brian

"Bring up the two.  No, the one.  No, put it back and get the three."  All this before the start.  Another good wind night, 8-14 knots, gradually easing.  Two new guests.

crew: Charley, Eric, Maureen, Jeff, Greg, Mystery Bob, Brian

A fairly steady 12-15 knots but some variability depending on which side of the bay we were on.  This made guessing the wind an especially important part of the race.

7/10/06  WBYC

crew: Charley, Tonya, Eric, Maureen, Jeff, Greg

Course was south to Calf Pasture then north of Prudence Island around RGN and back to finish at R-8.  Conditions: 14-19 knots with gusts and an incoming tide.  The number two and a full main worked nicely.  Neck and neck with Shanachie at the finish line.  The Mumm was way out front, followed by Hermosa, then us.  Even after corrected times we came in third, which is respectable given the modern designs of the first two boats.  We gave Hermosa a good run for her money.

crew: Charley, Gus, Eric, Maureen, Roberto, Tonya, Jeff, Greg

We stayed closer to Hermosa than usual.

7/19/06  EGYC

crew: Charley, Gus, Eric, Jeff, Greg, Cliff, Brian

We went up toward Providence and RGN, then back to the committee boat somewhere between R-8 and C-3.   We had some serious competition on the leeward leg.

7/20/06  AHYC Lady Skipper Series

crew: Tonya, Charley, Jeff, Amy

Tonya drove.  We won!  It was an inside course with about five legs.  An approaching tropical storm threatened rain but never delivered more than a few sprinkles.

7/24/06  WBYC

crew: Charley, Jeff, Greg, Eric, Maureen, Shire

A beautiful summer night, warm, low humidity.  The winds were steady around 12 knots, mostly from the south southwest.  Shire joined us for the first time as a guest and did very well.

7/26/06  EGYC Lady Skipper Regatta

crew: Genevieve, Tonya, Maureen, Charley, Eric, Andrew, Cliff, Brian

The course was somewhat awkward, cutting across the channel at about Sally Rock.  There were three classes with about 9 boats in each class, with staggered starts.  Each of our ace lady skippers took one of the three windward-leeward legs.  It was some crazy driving with all the other boats on a relatively short course.

7/31/06  WBYC

crew: Charley, Jeff, Greg, Eric, Maureen, Roberto, Chris, Shire

This was an exciting race.  We managed to dog a couple of our tough competitors and it was a close finish.  Did we win?  Check the page.

One of the strongest combinations of wind and chop we can remember for Greenwich Bay with the race held.  It was quite lumpy.  We'd just returned from the Block Island race at 5:00, dropped off one crew and were joined by Eric and Maureen.  The maximum wind gust anyone saw was 28.  The #2 and a full main were the sail choice.  We were the only ones to set a spinnaker, albeit the Chicken Chute*, and eventually gave the other boats good reason to keep theirs below when we executed a spectacular broach trying to gybe at one of the marks.  We lost a lot of time but found out we still won the race.  By 1 second!  It was a night that tested everyone, a Nantucket Sleigh Ride, an experience that let's you know you're alive.

8/16/06  EGYC

crew: Charley, Jim, Eric, Tonya, Jeff, Greg, Fr. Chris M.

Gentle breezes bring their own kind of confusion.  Winds were 3-9 knots which meant that searching for wind was more critical than surviving it.  We were reminded to keep a lookout on the entire fleet as we spent too much attention on one competitor while another slipped in on a different breeze and won.  Fr. Chris distinguished himself as winch monkey.

8/17/06  AHYC Lady Skipper Series

crew: Tonya, Charley, Jeff, Amy

Tonya drove.  It was an inside course a couple times around a triangle formed from A to Sally Rock to H.  Winds were a manageable 3-9 knots but with fewer dead spots than last night.  The weather was clear and comfortable.

8/21/06  WBYC

crew: Jeff G., Charley, Jim, Roberto, Chris, Jeff, Greg, Amy, Eric, Maureen

The visit of the Rock Star.  Another full house.  Gentle (7-12 knots) winds at a fairly steady clip.

8/23/06  EGYC

crew: Charley, Eric, Maureen, Jeff, Greg, Amy, Roberto, Chris, Jim, Tom S.

It was a really short course tonight, mostly within Greenwich Bay.  Captain Tom of Rose of Sharon joined us for the night.  Chris, son of Roberto, is starting to become a regular, poor lost soul that he is.   Second to the last race of the series.  We did okay, came in 2nd behind Dark Star.

crew: Charley, Gus, Eric, Maureen, Tonya, Jeff, Greg, Amy, Shire, Angela L.

A drizzly finish to the West Bay Summer Series.  Winds were 8-14 knots with a steady drizzle the entire night.  A nice long spinnaker run with the 0.6 ounce and a spinnaker reach to the finish.  Angela joined us as a guest for the first time.

The last night of the East Greenwich YC Summer Series.  The weather was warmish at the dock but quickly got cool as we approached R-8, an appropriate metaphor for this transition to Fall.  All said, it was a beautiful night.  Chris got his Thunder shirt.  Charley kindly treated us to dinner at the EGYC fete after the race.  We found out we took third tonight.  For some reason we just couldn't get past Dark Star.  Our tacks and gybes were pretty good, albeit somewhat jumbled with all the hands on deck.

9/14/06  AHYC Lady Skipper Series

crew: Tonya, Charley, Jeff, Greg

Tonya drove.  This was the last race of the series.  Drizzly night.  If it were easy, everybody would do it.  We won!  It was an inside course with about five legs.  An approaching tropical storm threatened rain but never delivered more than a few sprinkles.  We won!
